INTERACTIVE BURKA

Interactive Burka

‘I am (in)visible so I am’.

From our private domain we chat, email and scan our world. We withdraw ourselves in our own self-organizing unit, behind our personal mobile devices, with a non-stop view on the real-time world. When contacting each other from here our first question is: ‘WHERE are you?’. But the answer on this question remains a aenigma in this world; as does the answer to the question: ‘WHO are you?’ - because we contact the other person through non-physical interaction.
In ‘On media theorie’ Arjen Mulder writes about ‘touching each other’:
‘The most direct form of communication is undoubtedly touching. Make your body lie is difficult. (...). However, while media extend the body in space and time, they prevent us from touching. Media create a world without touching, a body-less existence.(...) The normality of media is not a communicative sphere, but a sovereign space, a parallel world in our daily reality. Media space is a ME-Space...’ In this ‘body-less’ ME-space the body is digital. It exists out of pixels, has a changing identity; experiencing the space around as a data-space.

We compare this experience of the ME-space with the enclosed, sovereign, space of the burka, closing the wearer within. We are interested in the burka because of the way in which the wearer withdraw herself or herself publicly, and in this way become ‘publicly invisible’.
In Interactive Burka we consider the meaning of the burka in terms of a voluntarily worn wearable. We interpret the burka in the way people wearing it praise the burka: the burka as a body and en sight restricting, and this way contemplative costume. A costume which offers its wearer an intimate, private space; being part of an intense experience. Which for the onlookers stays unknown; like an aenigma.

We consider the burka in the context of a control society in which invisibility is a taboo.
Who is not visible here, is not controllable and traceble. This person is not usable in the urban  environment. So this person must be illegal, not trustworthy; and therefor threatening. So someone wearing a burka commits actively resistance against the transparancy demands of this control society...1 The actual tension concerning the burka shows both the taboo on invisibility as well as a desire to be invisible. For us the burka connects questions from different cultural perspectives about social insecurity, identity an invisibility.

- masturbating theater for homless-

Actually no one is masturbating in this.

By sitting audiences on chair to see performance, homless people under audience seat

could get heating through weight sensor. (more audience gets more heating)

and temperature of homeless(RFID)  send to billboard in public space and performers.

So, It's  win-win circulation from audience-homeless-performers and even gas co. and

government who organized out door performing art.
