Stockhausen on modern dance and intuitive music

Q&A session following a lecture on Live Electronic and Intuitive Music given on November 15th 1971 at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London
(partial transcript)

Stockhausen - modern dance... yes, the same! You can try the same with dance.

Q - then you would like the dancers to be directly intuitive players like the musicians?

Stockhausen - Yes, I think so...

Q - without... you know, without any trouble?

Stockhausen - No, you will have all the trouble to get the mechanical movements out of the body, which you have learnt, so it doesn't look like a certain style. that is the problem... you have learnt a lot of things and now it must be possible that the instantaneous action within the body can happen without that you immediately fall into a pattern of movement that you have learnt before. It needs a process of freeing the dancers now from pre-established patterns. And that might be very dangerous - it's the same as that man was saying before -that it must not become a new form of expressionism of emotional dance, when he tries to express the psychological processes that are going on within you ... you see, those people must become very... what's the opposite of egocentric... non-egocentric, because otherwise you always play yourself, and within that self, there's nothing but a big bag filled with stored information and material... I mean... I always say people start vomiting, musically... that's when they arecompletely closed within themselves, closed systems, they just produce themselves, what they are... What are we? Just storage of information. But when you can become like what I call a radio, a radio receiver, and just a transmitter, then you are not interested in yourself at all! There's nothing to express, really. And you become very careful in detecting what is self-expression and what is expression of something that comes in you: that is amazing, and you, yourself, you are in a constant state of surprise, amazed... you're amazed, surprised at what happens to you. You are not satisfied with expressing yourself, but you are very amazed at what happens with you and to you. And when this stage is achieved, has arrived, even for short moments, then you will be quite astonished at what happens through your body... then you become a medium.
